Kyoto
Once the Capital of Japan, Kyoto balances old with new, featuring numerous temples and geisha districts alongside modern pedestrian streets and stores. With highlights such as Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, and Hōkan-ji temples, Kyoto also features hundreds of smaller temples, often scattered between stores and restaurants. Nijō Castle is also one of the last-standing Shogunate residences, impeccably preserved with gold-leaf screen doors and centuries-old gardens.
